  • Description:This chart shows the time differences around the world, when it is noon in Washington DC. In the early 19th century, accurate mechanical clocks became widely available, so local regions set their clocks by mean solar time. And that is why the times shown in the chart are not in the customary one hour increments we know today. As transportation by railroad became more common about mid-century, this plethora of local times became inconvenient, so a more uniform "railroad time" was beginnig to take hold. In the US a national time zone system was accepted across the country in 1883. Distances from Washington are noted as well.
