Title: That part of America where a degree of latitude was… by Mason & Dixon 1769 map Description: [A Map of Maryland and Country adjacent]. A Map of that part of America, where a degree of latitude was measured for the Royal Society by Charles Mason & Jeremiah Dixon.. This map, published in the Gentleman's Magazine in November 1769, documents the results of the survey conducted by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon between 1763 and 1767 to resolve a century-long boundary dispute between the Penn and Calvert families (of Pennsylvania and Maryland respectively). Earlier attempts by local surveyors had failed, prompting the Royal Society to commission Mason and Dixon, who combined precise astronomical observations with detailed ground measurements. Their findings were first published in the Royal Philosophical Society’s Transactions in early 1769 and later in the Gentleman's Magazine. The map covers parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and New Jersey. Originally, "Mason and Dixon's Line" referred specifically to the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, including what are now the Delaware counties. However, over time, the term gained broader cultural significance. After Pennsylvania abolished slavery, it served as a demarcation line for the legality of slavery, and thus the dividing line between free states and slave states during the Civil War, reinforcing its lasting symbolic role in American history. In popular American usage, the Mason-Dixon Line has come to symbolize the cultural boundary between the North and the South (Dixie). by Mason, Charles Mason & Dixon, Jeremiah. Published 1769.
