Title: US Coast Survey §VI Florida. St John's River & Charlotte Harbor. Miami 1860 map Description: U.S. Coast Survey Sketch F showing the progress of the survey in Section VI with a general reconnaissance of the Coast of Florida 1848-60. Sub sketch St. John's River and Vicinity. Sub sketch Charlotte harbor'. A scarce early U.S. Coast Survey chart documenting progress in the coastal survey of Florida. Triangulation efforts to date had been concentrated on the Florida Keys, Key Biscayne, Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, the St. Johns River, and an overland stretch westward from Jacksonville to Cedar Keys. The Miami River and the nascent settlement of Miami are identified, although the population of entire county in 1860 was less than 100 people. The chart intriguingly notes the paths of numerous drift bottles—tossed overboard and later recovered—providing valuable insights into prevailing surface currents. Several military forts are marked, including Fort Lauderdale, along with areas including the "Indian District," "Indian Hunting Grounds," and the Everglades. . Alexander Dallas Bache, Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Published Published in the 1860 annual report. Publication date 1861. Antique coastal survey map. Size 67 x 46 cm | 26.0 x 18.0 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Wear and short splits at juncture. The map is printed on paper which has become brittle with age, as is usual with US Coast Survey maps of this era. The map is fragile and at risk of tears, splits along the fold and flaking, even with careful handling. There is toning along the folds. By the time you receive the map, its condition may have deteriorated compared to that shown. For an additional charge, we can arrange to have the map laid down onto linen to stablise it; we recommend this approach if you intend to frame the map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. This is a folding map. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain.
