Massachusetts 1860 map Description: Preliminary Coast Charts Nos. 12, 13 & 14 - Coast of the United States - Monomoy and Nantucket Shoals to Block Island. [Coast of Rhode Island & Massachusetts. Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket]. A scarce and impressive mid-19th century set of three large-format nautical charts depicting the southern coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Presented here as they appear when joined, the maps are offered for sale in unjoined condition, allowing them to be framed individually or combined to form a single, striking wall map. Rich in detail, the scale is sufficient to show individual buildings and city blocks, along with extensive depth soundings. Informative annotations and tables provide sailing directions, tidal information, lighthouse locations, magnetic variation, and current patterns. The triangulation and topography were carried out by a team under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. Engraved by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, the set was published in the 1860 edition of the Superintendent’s Report. . Alexander Dallas Bache, Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Published Published in the 1860 annual report. Publication date 1861. Antique coastal survey map. Three sheets unjoined (Please note that the image shows a digital composite showing how the maps would look when joined). Size 98 x 206 cm | 38.5 x 81.0 inches. Condition: Fair: Printed on three sheets unjoined. The image shown is a digital composite of how the map would look when joined. For an additional fee, we can arrange to have the sheets joined and laid down on to linen; given the fragile condition of the map, we recommend this approach if you intend to frame it. We will contact the buyer prior to shipping to discuss this. There is wear and partial splits at junctures and along folds. The map is printed on paper which has become brittle with age, as is usual with US Coast Survey maps of this era. The map is fragile and at risk of tears, splits along the fold and flaking, even with careful handling. There is toning along the folds. By the time you receive the map, its condition may have deteriorated compared to that shown. Please note any other blemishes on the scan prior to purchasing this picture. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. This is a folding map. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain.
