Title: US Coast Survey chart Section IX. Texas. Galveston Bay—Corpus Christi 1860 map Description: U.S. Coast Survey Sketch I showing the progress of the survey in Section No. IX from 1848 to 1860 [Coast of Texas from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi]. A detailed early U.S. Coast Survey chart of the coast of Texas from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi. This map charts the gradual progress of triangulation and hydrographic work along the Gulf Coast over a 12-year period. The important port towns of Galveston and Corpus Christi are clearly marked—Galveston being the most populous and commercially significant city in Texas at the time, and Corpus Christi a growing settlement on the western frontier of the coast. The chart reflects the military and strategic importance of this stretch of coastline for shipping, trade, and naval navigation. The Mexican-American War and US annexation of Texas were then still recent events. Parts of the coast are still marked as unsurveyed. Produced under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey, for his 1860 Report. . Alexander Dallas Bache, Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Published Published in the 1860 annual report. Publication date 1861. Antique coastal survey map. Size 27 x 65 cm | 10.5 x 25.5 inches. Condition: Fair: Partial splits along folds. The map is printed on paper which has become brittle with age, as is usual with US Coast Survey maps of this era. The map is fragile and at risk of tears, splits along the fold and flaking, even with careful handling. There is toning along the folds. By the time you receive the map, its condition may have deteriorated compared to that shown. For an additional charge, we can arrange to have the map laid down onto linen to stablise it; we recommend this approach if you intend to frame the map. Please note any other blemishes on the scan prior to purchasing this picture. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. This is a folding map. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain.
