The territorial borders in the Trans-Mississippi West reflect the shifting and often ambiguous nature of frontier cartography, shaped by ongoing settlement, political fragmentation, and contested claims. This map not only illustrates the incomplete process of westward expansion but also underscores the existential uncertainty surrounding the Union’s future during the war. Of particular interest, the map depicts the short-lived Confederate Arizona, which starkly contrasts with the modern state of Arizona. Before 1861, present-day Arizona and New Mexico were part of a single entity—New Mexico Territory. However, during the Civil War, the southern half of this territory declared itself part of the Confederacy, effectively dividing New Mexico Territory on north-south basis. This Confederate Arizona encompassed what is now southern Arizona and southern New Mexico, whereas today’s states of Arizona and New Mexico are divided by west-east arrangement. From an undated atlas for which the internal evidence of publication date is inconsistent: the maps appear to have been engraved at different times between 1860 & 1866 by Swanston, George Heriot.
