This fascinating map includes a substantial amount of early detail. California is shown as an island, with twenty named places. The Straits of Annian, implying a passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic or Arctic, is shown. The cartography of the Southwest includes remarkable detail given how little was actually known about the region at the time. A note close to the source of the Mississippi states that "In this tree is cut the Arms of France". The Mississippi is shown entering the sea substantially to the west of its actual location, based on Lasalle, with the Ohio River flowing into the Mississippi in the general vicinity of Dallas. Lake Superior is named as "Tracy L[ake]". A Recollects/Récollets Mission is shown at around 50 degrees north.
