Description
Early 19th century kokutan (ebony) wood netsuke in seal shape, its top with a Koma inu - a mythical lion-dog, the pairs of which guard the entrances of Japanese Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. The impression of the seal is shown on the first photo with image flipped left to right to present how iit will actually print on paper. Strong early crisp carving, himotoshi (cord opening) formed by the legs of the beast. Superb patina with characteristic ebony sheen, wonderful feel of age. Length 1.28 inches.
