Description
Late Meiji /early Taisho (1910s) wooden netsuke of a sambaso dancer in characteristic posture, a fan sticking out through the folds of his robe, and wearing typical Okina mask and hat used in the dance. The netsuke is skillfully carved out of hinoki (cypress wood) in ittjobori (one cut) style typical for the Hida school, and painted with bright colors over a layer of gesso. Perfectly captured facial expression, wonderful rendition of Noh theater robes as geometric planes with painted textile patterns of cranes in flight over pine saplings. Signed CHIKUJU on the back - this artist from Hida school is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 452, number 134). Height 2.31 inches.
