Description
19th century wooden netsuke of Goshisho holding a huge bronze incense burner over his head with one hand, while writing a poem with a brush on a low table with the other. Goshisho was the general and the king’s counselor, who was famous both for his literary skills and incredible physical strength. Nice quality carving, severe face, clever use of his flying sleeve as an additional support for the burner, good detailing. Beautiful patina, left side of the table is reattached (done very well). Signed MASAKAZU on the back - for the list of Masakazu carvers see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p.708. Height 1.93 inches.
