Original 1895 Japanese woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika from the series “Mirror of Army and Navy Heroes” with scenes from the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). The print depicts sailors helping the blinded war hero Tanaka Ichitaro to joyfully touch the gun on a captured warship. Published by Inoue Kichijiro circa 1895-1896. Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) is considered to be the last of the significant Japanese classic ukiyo-e (woodblock print) artists and was known for depiction of Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars in woodblock prints. Overall in great condition, comes with information card prepared by the editorial secretary of Japan Ukiyo-e Society. Image size 12 3/4 x 8 3/8 inches, paper size 14 x 10 inches.
