Description
Superbly elegant 19th century long wooden netsuke of a branch of reishi fungus with several heads and twisted stems. Exquisite carving in Japanese taste, extraordinary netsuke with very strong scholarly connotation. Fantastic finish and patina, himotoshi formed by stems. Signed SEIMIN TO (carved by Seimin) on the side - this rare artist is listed in NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 925. Judging by the style and quality of carving and material (sakura wood), the artist was a Nagoya school carver. Superb sculpture, all that a great netsuke shall be. Length 6 1/4 inches.
