Rare porcelain netsuke of a carp swimming up a waterfall. Made by Armin Muller (American, 1932-2000), the artist is listed in “Netsuke: The H.I.H. Prince Takamado Collection II”, p. 250. According to a Chinese myth a carp that can swim up the waterfall turns into a dragon, and thus serves as a paragon of perseverance, especially in scholarly pursuits. Superbly modeled, wonderfully realistic, finely incised scales, great depiction of swirling water, beautiful light celadon glaze pooling in recessed areas giving extra depth to the surface. Incised monogram of the artist in roundel on the bottom. Comes in original tomobako (storage box) made by the artist and with his monogram on the cover. Excellent sculpture in superb condition. Length 1.84 inches.
