FINE VIKING VOTIVE AXE NECKLACE, C.850-1050 AD

Description

Silvered bronze axe, over 1 5/8” height (1.69”), of iconic Viking battle axe form with circular socket flared front and back for stability on the haft. Back swept bearded bit, pierced with a single hole and back nub and decorated with repeated circle motifs. These votive axes are found in the Baltic hinterlands and were used sacrificially, probably at funerals of warriors. This example has been professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored. It is suspended from an 18” polished leather neck cord for modern wear. It is jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
