Description
Arhat Seated Statue (Pre-Ming Dynasty), height 110 cm, length 95 cm, width 79 cm. A temple enshrined statue from the Tang to Northern Song Dynasty, unearthed from Buddhist sites in the Central Plains. Pottery body coated with tri-color glaze (green, yellow, brown). Made by a combination of mold casting and sculpture techniques, the arhat sits in the lotus position holding prayer beads, with smooth clothing lines and naturally mottled tri-color glaze, reflecting the realistic style of folk statue making from the Tang to Northern Song Dynasty. Tang to Northern Song Dynasty (7th–12th centuries). Tri-color arhat statues are important physical objects for the study of Buddhist folk beliefs from the Tang to Northern Song Dynasty; this vividly shaped piece with well-preserved glaze is rare in existence and provides reference for the study of statue making craftsmanship of that period.
