Jade Owl (Pre-Ming Dynasty), thickness 1 cm, length 4.3 cm, width 1.2 cm, weight 24 g. A sacrificial jade artifact unearthed from Hongshan Culture sites of the Neolithic Age. Xiuyan jade with partial patina and a moist texture. Carved by round carving technique, the owl shape is concise and primitive, embodying the theocratic symbol characteristic of Hongshan Culture jade artifacts. Hongshan Culture, Neolithic Age (4000 BC – 3000 BC). Hongshan Culture jade owls represent China’s archaic jade; this typical-shaped piece with natural patina is of great significance for the study of Neolithic jade craftsmanship and religious beliefs, and is rare in existence.
