Description
Offered is a stunning 19th century copper mold made by Benham & Froud for Harrods of London. This mold was made by the famous London coppersmiths Benham & Froud c.1870, and sold at the London retailer Harrods in Knightsbridge.
This mold is marked on one side with an impressed number "481" which would have been the stock number. To the opposite side is an impressed "Harrods Ltd". This mold is not marked with Benham's famous orb and cross mark, but is the same #481 mold that Benham's produced and sold themselves.
Harrod's was established in 1824 in London and moved to their current location on Brompton Rd. in 1849. Harrods sold medicines, perfumes, stationary, kitchenware, fruits and vegetables, and a variety of other goods. They are still trading today, and Harrods is known as one of the most famous department stores in the world.
The design has six plain columns with small dome tops, each with four flattened sides. The mold is made from a very heavy gauge of copper and it dates from c.1870. The tinning to the interior is worn and would need to be re-tinned if it was to be used. This mold would have been used to make an aspic or gelatin side dish, or possibly a small cake. It is in excellent antique condition with very minor, if any issues that I can see. Please see all of the photos as they are an important part of the description. This piece has been professionally polished.
