Lovely Set/8 Italian Grand Tour Plaster Cast Seals.
The original seals would have been carved by hand in Roman times from a hard stone. They would have been owned by the likes of emperors and very rich nobility, they are basically stories from Roman mythology. The original seal would be used to make a plaster cast. These are particularly fine. They would be sold as a souvenir and also used as a decoration on important houses in Italy.
The Grand Tour was only taken by the very rich during the end of the 18th Century and all through the 19th Century. Young gentlemen and occasionally ladies were sent to tour Europe and study the language and culture of each country. They would usually take around 3 years, during this time they would bring back momentous of each place they visited. The seals would be from Italy. Sometimes framed in Italy and sometimes on the return.
These seals are in a glassed deep picture frame. Originally found in Italy, purchased in the Netherlands.
