Description
Jimmy Lee Sudduth (2010-2007) Outsider Art painting of the gristmill where he worked most of his life. Signed "Jim Sudduth". 24" x 24" on 1/4 inch plywood. Painted and signed in 2003 when Jimmy Lee was 93 years old. Accompanied by a picture taken of him signing the actual piece. As an outsider artist, he collected pigments from earth, rocks plants, foodstuffs, and industrial products for use in his finger paintings. He used his fingers because "they never wore out." His numerous works were typically executed on found surfaces such as plywood, doors, and boards from demolished buildings. He experimented with mixing his pigments with various binders to make them adhere better, including syrup, sugar, soft drinks, and caulk. He was the recipient of the 2005 Alabama Governor's Award.
The painting was acquired by the seller from Bennie Hutto, who personally knew Jimmy Lee, bought the painting from him and took the picture of him signing it. Ms. Hutto, who lives in Mississippi has collected his work, as well as that of other outsider artists. The seller is a friend of hers.
