An amazing yellowware Rockingham glaze dog figure
What is known as Rockingham pottery began in England and is characterized by its mottled brown surface. When English potterers began immigrating to America, they brought this distinctive glaze with them. Soon Rockingham pottery became the majority of the pottery manufactured in mid-nineteenth century America. Variety of wares have been made for household use as well as for decoration, like the animal figurines and statues.
This seated dog was meant to resemble the popular King Charles spaniels, and could've been used as a doorstop or for decor.
A similar figurine, made in Ohio, East Liverpool is part is hosted in the National Museum of American History, Behring Center with catalogue # 58.724

Measurements: Approximately 11" high x 8.75" x 6"
It weighs 5 lbs.
Condition: Good overall. The base has been repaired back in time, noticeable at the yellow base, unobtrusive from the outside on the brown glaze. Minute glaze flake at the dog's nose, a few other flea bites here and there, altogether commensurate with age and use. Please see photos. All original.
