William Shayer (1787-1879) was a prominent English landscape and figure painter from the early Victorian era. A self-taught artist, his career gradually moved from painting carriages and heraldry to eventual collaborations with the most prominent artists of his time in Britain, including Edward Charles Williams and family. His eldest son, William Joseph Shayer Jr. (1811-1892) was also a painter, and this piece was painted after the late 1820's and most likely, after the son decided to take up the art of his father, as the suffix "Sr. (Senior)" was added to the signature.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy (6 works), the British Institution (82 works), and at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists (338 works). He also exhibited in many of the lesser-known Victorian art venues as well. His works are on display at many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery, and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art (Source: Wikipedia)
