James King was based in Shiprock, New Mexico and became widely admired for oil paintings that “tell stories” of Navajo life, history, and resilience. He earned significant recognition on the Native art circuit, winning Best of Show at the Heard Museum in 2002 and Best of Category at the Santa Fe Indian Market and Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in 2005.
