Philadelphia, PA, January 18, 1776
Declaration Signer John Morton 2x Signed DS, Rare 1776 Example!
DS
A manuscript document attesting to the deposition of William Dewees concerning the transfer of property in Amity Township, endorsed by John Morton as associate justice. 1p, measuring 13.25" x 12.5", Philadelphia, PA, January 18, 1776. Twice signed, both as "John Morton", once within the first line of text and again at conclusion. The present document references the deed found on verso between John Bell and John Petty, dated January 30, 1727. Scalloping along upper edge. Exhibits deep folds, with moderate soiling and staining throughout. Remnants of prior mounting present near upper edge of verso. Morton's paper seal remains intact. A scarce and desirable example!
Reading in part:
"…Before me, John Morton, one of the Justices of the Superior Court, came William Dewees… and the within written Indenture subscribed with the name John Bell… and with the Names Edward Farmar, Lovell Jackson as Witnesses… in the presence of… Farmar… Sworn & Subscribed… Before me Witness my hand & Seal."
A founding father of the United States, John Morton (1725-1777) would serve as a delegate from Pennsylvania in both the First and Second Continental Congresses. When it came time to vote on the Declaration of Independence, Morton acted as the swing vote that allowed his state to support its ratification. His death, a mere nine months after the Declaration's signing, makes Morton's signature among the most desirable of the bunch, particularly with a date of this period!
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
