Details:
Marilyn Monroe original 20th Century-Fox studio release reference photograph from Let’s Make It Legal (1951), produced for the Ladies Wardrobe Department. The vintage gelatin silver glossy photograph measures approximately 8 x 10 inches and depicts Monroe modeling the black and gold metallic jacquard one-piece bathing suit worn in the film as her character Joyce Mannering. The suit was designed by Renie under the supervision of legendary costume designer Charles LeMaire and adapted from an original Helene of Hollywood design.
This image documents one of Monroe’s most celebrated early screen looks. A publicity photograph of her wearing this exact bathing suit was famously used as the full-color back cover of Pageant magazine, March 1952, which proclaimed Marilyn to be “The hottest thing in Hollywood since Jean Harlow.” The photograph served as an internal wardrobe reference and studio documentation rather than a standard publicity still, making it especially desirable.
The photograph has been professionally encapsulated and certified by PSA/DNA as a Type 1 original photograph, confirming it as a first-generation print developed from the original negative within the period of production. The verso is clean; any apparent spotting visible in the images is solely a visual effect caused by the PSA plastic slab and is not present on the physical photograph itself.
Fine condition.
Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) remains one of the most iconic figures in film history, emblematic of Hollywood’s Golden Age and enduring popular culture. Let’s Make It Legal was released during Monroe’s rapid rise to stardom, just prior to her breakout year in 1953, and wardrobe imagery from this period captures her transformation from contract player to international sensation. Her line from the film—“Who wouldn’t want to meet a man who has millions who isn’t even bald?”—reflects the sharp wit and screen presence that helped define her persona.
A PSA/DNA Type 1 studio wardrobe reference photograph, documenting an iconic Monroe look at a pivotal moment in her career—ideal for advanced collectors of classic Hollywood, original studio photography, and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia.
