Malcolm Kilduff received this warm autographed typed letter from Donald H. McGannon, President of Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, written on corporate letterhead and dated November 24, 1964. In the letter, McGannon expresses sincere appreciation for Kilduff’s important contribution to the production of “Dialogue in Dallas,” a post-assassination broadcast project reflecting on the events of November 22, 1963. McGannon notes that the fine end result “could not have been achieved” without Kilduff’s participation.
He further reports that reactions from many prominent Americans who listened to the program have been “most favorable,” and he extends personal thanks for Kilduff’s assistance in making the project possible. McGannon closes by sending kind regards and hoping Kilduff enjoys the enclosed copy of the finished work.
A compelling piece of post-presidency broadcasting history illustrating continued public engagement with the Kennedy legacy—and Kilduff’s ongoing role in shaping that narrative.
Fine condition.
Provenance: From the estate of Kennedy Assistant Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff, who famously announced JFK’s death to the press.
Malcolm MacGregor Kilduff Jr. served as Assistant White House Press Secretary under President John F. Kennedy. On November 22, 1963, in Dallas, he was thrust into history when he stepped before reporters at Parkland Memorial Hospital and made the official public announcement that President Kennedy had died—pointing to his own head to indicate the location of the fatal wound. Widely respected for his steadiness under unimaginable pressure, Kilduff continued to serve in the Johnson Administration before moving into private sector communications. His papers and personal files remain among the most significant firsthand archival sources relating to the transition period following the assassination.
