Malcolm Kilduff received autographed typed condolence letter from Harrison Clark of the Ford Motor Company, written on Ford letterhead and dated November 26, 1963—just four days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Clark expresses deep sympathy for Kilduff’s loss and reflects on the national tragedy, noting that his own wish was that the country might honor President Kennedy “by calling an end to hate.”
Clark acknowledges how busy Kilduff must have been helping President Johnson during the transition and, with great respect, requests future guidance from the White House regarding the President’s “Situation Room” communication techniques. Citing a New York Times Magazine article by Sidney Hyman on Kennedy’s briefing procedures, Clark explains Ford’s interest in improving its own executive information systems and asks to be referred to any available material when convenient.
A poignant and historically important correspondence demonstrating how corporate leaders, government figures, and citizens reached out to those closest to the Administration in the aftermath of November 22, 1963.
Fine condition.
Provenance: From the estate of Kennedy Assistant Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff, who famously announced JFK’s death to the press.
Malcolm MacGregor Kilduff Jr. served as Assistant White House Press Secretary under President John F. Kennedy. On November 22, 1963, in Dallas, he was thrust into history when he stepped before reporters at Parkland Memorial Hospital and made the official public announcement that President Kennedy had died—pointing to his own head to indicate the location of the fatal wound. Widely respected for his steadiness under unimaginable pressure, Kilduff continued to serve in the Johnson Administration before moving into private sector communications. His papers and personal files remain among the most significant firsthand archival sources relating to the transition period following the assassination.
