Clark M. Clifford (1906–1998) was one of the most influential Democratic political advisers of the 20th century. A trusted White House aide to Presidents Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and others, Clifford played a central role in shaping national security policy, Cold War strategy, and landmark political decisions. He later served as U.S. Secretary of Defense (1968–69), where he became a key voice urging de-escalation in Vietnam. Known for his sharp legal mind and deep political instincts, Clifford remained a defining figure in Washington for more than five decades.
