Katsumori Yamashiro autographed vintage glossy photograph, measuring approximately 3.25 × 4.5 inches, depicting him in Imperial Japanese Navy uniform. The photograph is signed in dark ink across the image. The verso bears a handwritten identification in pencil reading “Captain Katsumori Yamashiro.”
Fine condition. The photograph retains strong contrast and clarity.
Captain Katsumori Yamashiro served in the Imperial Japanese Navy and is historically significant for his direct involvement in the August 2, 1943 collision between the Japanese destroyer Amagiri and PT-109 in the Blackett Strait. The incident resulted in the sinking of PT-109, commanded by Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. Yamashiro later became a rare firsthand voice from the Japanese side of the encounter, offering accounts that challenged prevailing narratives of the collision and added critical perspective to one of the most studied episodes of Kennedy’s wartime service. Autographed material from Yamashiro is scarce and represents an extraordinary cross-cultural artifact tied directly to the formative World War II experience of the future 35th President of the United States.
