Details:
Katsumori Yamashiro autographed handwritten 8.5 x 11” manuscript presenting a detailed first-person narrative and hand-drawn diagram recounting the August 2, 1943 collision between the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Amagiri and John F. Kennedy’s PT-109 in the Solomon Islands. Written entirely in Yamashiro’s hand and signed at conclusion, the document offers a rare perspective from the opposing commander directly involved in the incident that became central to Kennedy’s wartime legend.
The multi-paragraph text sets out Yamashiro’s version of events in the Vella Gulf, identifying the movements of Amagiri, PT-109, and surrounding islands, and asserting that he ordered evasive action to avoid collision. He challenges later Allied accounts, specifically disputing claims attributed to other officers, and maintains that the ramming of PT-109 was accidental rather than intentional. The accompanying hand-drawn map visually traces ship movements and geography, including Kolombangara, New Georgia, Arundel, and surrounding waters, reinforcing the written testimony with operational context.
Fine condition.
This exceptional manuscript stands as one of the most unusual and compelling PT-109 artifacts known: a signed, contemporary-style narrative from the Japanese commander himself, directly addressing the collision that launched John F. Kennedy’s hero narrative and later political mythology. A centerpiece item for advanced JFK, PT-109, and World War II Pacific Theater collections, offering a rare opposing-side account tied to one of the most studied naval incidents of the war.
