Robert F. Kennedy (1925–1968) served as U.S. Senator from New York and previously as U.S. Attorney General. A central figure in American public life, Kennedy was a leading voice for civil rights, social justice, and opposition to the Vietnam War. His assassination in June 1968, just two months after this letter was written, cemented his place alongside his brother as one of the most consequential and mourned political figures of the 20th century.
