Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) was a former Marine who defected to the Soviet Union before returning to the United States, later becoming the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. He was arrested on November 22, 1963, for the murder of Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit and subsequently charged with Kennedy’s assassination, but was killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby before he could stand trial. Oswald’s life and actions remain central to decades of investigation, controversy, and debate.
