Louis Stokes autographed letter (TLS) dated May 7, 1996, on official Congress of the United States, House of Representatives letterhead. Stokes, who chaired the House Select Committee on Assassinations, responds to an inquiry regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, writing: “After trying a case in court that morning, I returned to my law office in preparation for another court session in the afternoon. It was there... that I first learned of the devastating news of President Kennedy’s assassination. Like many Americans, I received the news with disbelief and some mixture of anger.” Stokes further references his later role as Chair of the Committee, enclosing “a summary of the Committee’s findings and recommendations”—included here as a three-page Xeroxed report excerpt detailing the Committee’s 1979 conclusions, titled “Summary of Findings and Recommendations of the Select Committee on Assassinations in the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Tex., November 22, 1963," which notably acknowledged the likelihood of a conspiracy.
Fine condition.
Louis Stokes (1925–2015) was a longtime U.S. Representative from Ohio and the first African American elected to Congress from that state. As Chair of the House Select Committee on Assassinations in the late 1970s, Stokes oversaw the reexamination of the Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. assassinations, concluding that President Kennedy was “probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.” His work remains one of the most significant congressional investigations into 20th-century American history.
