Jim Leavelle (1920–2019) was a veteran Dallas Police Department detective best known for being handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald during the prisoner transfer on November 24, 1963. A longtime lawman, Leavelle served with the Dallas Police for decades and later became an important firsthand witness to the events surrounding the Kennedy assassination. His presence in the iconic Oswald transfer photograph—taken seconds before Ruby fired the fatal shot—cemented his place in American history, and his signed photographs remain among the most sought-after artifacts connected to the Kennedy assassination and its immediate aftermath.
