Leavelle is best remembered as the Dallas homicide detective who was escorting Lee Harvey Oswald when Oswald was fatally shot by Jack Ruby in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters on November 24, 1963. His distinctive appearance—most notably the white Stetson cowboy hat he was wearing at the time—became permanently etched into the visual record of the Kennedy assassination aftermath.
