Robert McClelland autographed 8.5 x 11 inch original hand-drawn study sketch depicting the bullet wounds sustained by John F. Kennedy, executed in blue ink and dated February 12, 2015. The diagram outlines the President’s head and upper torso and includes McClelland’s handwritten annotations identifying a probable entrance wound at the right hairline, a large posterior head exit wound measuring approximately 5 x 5 inches, a small exit wound in the back, and a small bullet wound low in the neck. The sketch is titled in McClelland’s hand, “President Kennedy’s Bullet Wounds,” and is signed “Robert M. McClelland, M.D.” at lower right.
This graphic study reflects McClelland’s first-hand medical observations as one of the physicians who treated President Kennedy at Parkland Memorial Hospital immediately following the assassination on November 22, 1963. His contemporaneous and later recollections have been central to historical and medical discussions surrounding the nature and location of the President’s wounds. The drawing serves as a visual summation of McClelland’s long-held account, rendered decades later as a reflective and explanatory piece rather than a contemporaneous hospital record.
Fine condition. Includes a JSA authentication label in the lower right corner.
Robert N. McClelland, M.D. (1920–2019) was a general surgeon at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and one of the doctors who attended President Kennedy in Trauma Room One following the shooting in Dealey Plaza. Present during the resuscitation efforts, McClelland later provided testimony and interviews describing a large occipital head wound, making him a significant medical witness in the historical record of the assassination. Over the ensuing decades, he remained an important figure in scholarly, medical, and public discussions of the case, and his signed writings and drawings are highly sought after for their direct connection to one of the most consequential events in American history.
