Details:
Jacqueline Kennedy memorial first day of issue cover grouping honoring President John F. Kennedy, consisting of two official JFK tribute covers, one housed in its original Washington Press presentation folder. Each cover bears the JFK 5¢ memorial stamp, postmarked Boston, Massachusetts, May 29, 1964, the official first day of issue marking for the John F. Kennedy commemorative stamp. The cachet features a formal portrait of President Kennedy with memorial text and a printed prayer, accompanied by Jacqueline Kennedy’s facsimile signature as issued.
The presentation folder includes an original explanatory letter from The Washington Press, signed in type by Leo and Sam August, detailing the behind-the-scenes coordination with Mrs. Kennedy and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in selecting the final portrait and approving the stamp design and color. The letter documents direct communication with Mrs. Kennedy’s office and notes that only a very limited number of these presentation folders were prepared from the original plate, making this an especially desirable and well-documented memorial issue.
The second matching first day cover, identical in design and postmark, is presented loose. Together, the pair offers a compelling and complete representation of the official postal tribute to President Kennedy.
