Details:
John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy personally owned stoneware mug, likely used at the family residences in Hyannis Port or Martha’s Vineyard. The vintage mug was produced by Lord Nelson Pottery and features straight sides with a subtly flared handle, measuring approximately 3.5 inches high with a 3-inch diameter (excluding the handle). While no maker’s mark is visible—possibly obscured by the original sale sticker—the mug originates from a documented Lord Nelson Pottery set.
This piece was acquired from Sotheby’s landmark auction, “Property From Kennedy Family Homes,” held February 15–17, 2005, and retains the original gold-rimmed Sotheby’s auction sticker numbered “435/71.” Accompanied by additional authentication in the form of a University Archives tag signed by owner John Reznikoff.
Condition: Fine condition overall, with visible glaze wear and minor chipping consistent with period use.
This understated piece of tableware reflects the casual coastal lifestyle of the Kennedy family and aligns closely with Jacqueline Kennedy’s well-documented appreciation for early American decorative arts. Her refined but practical aesthetic extended from private family spaces to her celebrated restoration of the White House.
In an excerpt from the Sotheby’s 2005 auction catalogue, Caroline Kennedy directly addressed her mother’s lifelong passion for American antiques and confirmed the provenance of objects from the family homes, noting that many pieces—including everyday household items—were acquired through Jackie Kennedy’s regular visits to antique shops on Cape Cod and Nantucket. These objects, she explained, were deeply connected to family life at Hyannis Port and to her parents’ time in the White House.
A rare and personal Kennedy family domestic artifact.
