Taken in the immediate aftermath of Kennedy’s assassination, this photograph captures one of the most quietly powerful symbolic moments of the transition following November 22, 1963. Kennedy’s rocking chairs were widely associated with his presidency and personal presence in the Oval Office, and their removal became an enduring visual metaphor for the sudden end of the New Frontier.
