Juan Gris (1887-1927) was a Spanish painter whose lucidly composed still lifes are major works of the style called Synthetic Cubism.
A remarkable example of that technique of papier collés which Gris carried in perfection during this year 1914, in Paris and at Collioure, and which was so well suited to his thoroughly honest, realistic-minded nature. It was chiefly in their drawings, that Braque and Picasso used papier collés, while Gris systematically resorted to them as a means of effective pictorial construction. Newspapers and even imitation wood-graining became an integral part of an eminently sober, minutely calculated composition.
