Description
A striking large vintage period full-color print of still life "Le Journal" (The Newspaper) by a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor Georges Braque. Comes from a rare First Limited Edition art folio published in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1940s by Albert Skira. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 2. Excellent condition - never framed.
With the 1914-1918 war over, Braque began to make a fresh approach to Cubism. He took new delight in building with color and struck polyphonic harmonies of refined yet spontaneous tonalities that conferred a discreet and characteristic splendor on his canvases. Adept, now as always, at over-stepping the bounds of mere decoration, he seemed nevertheless to center his investigations on a rhythmic orchestration of forms that fall together kaleidoscopically.
