Description
Leamington Grand Steeple Chase, 1837.
Large, beautifully detailed original equestrian English print.
29" wide by 21" tall -presented in a traditional black wood frame with gilt line trim. A perfect period presentation of what was a very fine 19th C. image.
The scale of this one allows for 12 horses, a long field and farm view, with a village skyline and lovely horizon. Horse names and owners are even noted in the captions below the scene - fantastic!
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
We have a weakness for proper 19th C. equestrian prints, particularly of flat track and steeplechase horse racing.
And, the larger the better, particularly if the passage of time has given the artwork itself some patina that confirms its pedigree and age.
This one has it all!
Right down to the simple, but well done, black and gilt molding that says museum piece.
This is the one that goes in the men's lounge, above the bar, under the soft lights, so that the pink and grey patina of its time worn scene can mix with the wonderful color ways it still presents. A fascinating document to study and a lovely work to bring home.
If you seek a piece that says we've been here a long time and we understand English Country Life, this is the one!
