Description
A lovely large vintage period full-color print after still life "Lierre en Fleurs" (Flowering Ivy) by French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Comes from a rare First Limited Edition art folio, published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1940s. Signed in the print (printed). Printed on one side. Numbered 6. Good condition - a crease at the top left corner, most of which won't be visible when the piece is matted and framed, some edge wear on the white border, never framed.
Overall 11.9"W x 9.45"H
For several years now Matisse had been seeking to strike a balance between line and color, on the strength of their mutual autonomy. Lines no longer bind, but merely rim colors, they amble along to suit themselves, or rather to suit a harmony all their own, while pure tones form color patches which, it seems, only fall by accident within the rhythmic boundaries of their contours. Here the artist's creative freedom soars with a happy rapture that even Matisse himself could not always match. Everything combines to evoke an unreal world, but a world sufficient unto itself in which the date, signature and title, written in by the artist at the bottom, assume pictorial significance.
