Description
Black Madonna is Hung Liu's touching depiction of a Black mother and child's sacred bond, referencing the biblical Madonna and Child composition. Hung Liu was a Chinese-American artist known for her powerful figurative works addressing history, memory, and identity. Her work is included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Whitney, and the Smithsonian. Liu's American migrant images are honest, intimate portrayals of individuals persevering under the challenging conditions of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression eras. Inspired by Dorothea Lange's photographs, Hung Liu+-IBk-s Black Madonna (2016) reflects her ongoing engagement with historical imagery and cultural identity of everyday life under periods of oppression. Measuring 33.75 by 26.5 inches, the hand colored lithograph offers a strong, contemplative presence. This piece is in very good condition and signed by the artist. Image courtesy (C) Hung Liu Estate
