
A Roman-style marble portrait bust head of a woman 19th Century or earlier Modelled full face with waved hair, 29cm high Footnotes: Provenance with Royal Athena Galleries, New York. Acquired by the present owner from the above in 1984. This head is possibly intended to be a portrait of Sallustia Orbiana, the wife of Severus Alexander, who was emperor AD 225-227. The distinctive hairstyle was popularized by Julia Domna, wife of the earlier Emperor, Septimius Severus, and continued to be favoured by Imperial and noble women into the early 3rd Century.
