Description
Moshe Kupferman (1933–2003) was born in Galicia, Poland, and immigrated to Israel as a teenager after surviving the horrors of World War II, settling in the Kibbutz Lohamei Hagetaot, where he lived and created his entire life. He was one of the most important and most identified artists with abstract painting in Israel, and his work was characterized by restrained layers of color in shades of gray, ochre, and greenish, repeated brush marks, and geometric lines that build a personal language of erasure, construction, and memory. Kupferman belonged to the "Aklim" group that aspired to shape a unique Israeli abstract language, and combined in his work an emotional restraint and formal discipline that made his work iconic. During his career, he exhibited in many solo exhibitions at the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum, and international galleries, and represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1980. He won important awards, including the Israel Prize for Plastic Arts (2000), the Rappaport Prize (1982), the Sandberg Prize (1986), and the Jacob Pines Prize, and his works are in major collections in Israel and around the world. Untitled, 70x100 cm, oil on paper, signed and dated 1985, quality work, nice framing
