Title: River Santa Cruz to illustrate the Beagle/FitzRoy/Darwin expedition RGS 1837 map Description: River Santa Cruz'. This map, published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, illustrates the expedition up the Santa Cruz River led by Captain Robert FitzRoy and Charles Darwin during the second voyage of HMS Beagle. The river cuts through a series of rises and plateaux, forming wide plains covered with shells and shingle. Darwin discussed with FitzRoy his interpretation that these terraces were ancient shorelines, gradually raised in line with Lyell's geological theories. Darwin summarized this speculation in his essay on the Elevation of Patagonia, tentatively challenging some of Lyell’s ideas. Drawing on measurements taken by the Beagle's officers, as well as his own, Darwin proposed that the plains were raised in stages by large-scale forces acting over a wide area, rather than through continuous small-scale movements. The accompanying text article which describes the expedition will be included with the map in its original form, except for the first page, which will be provided as a facsimile. .
