Commentaries on the piece by Ukiyo-e Art consultants & editors Dr. Kiyoshi Shibui and Mr. Sadao Kikuchi:
Harunobu: Unsigned
Printer: Tsuruya Shokakudo
In the possession of Mr. Mitsueda Watanabe
The Ukiyo-E added a scintillating lustre when it took on the form of the colorful Nishiki-E. Harunobu, its founding father, was still young but his contact with Haikai literature caused him to acquire a peculiar sophistication as a genre painter. This piece, one of his "8 Views of the Drawing Room" captures the mood of everyday life in Edo as few others could. The idea of snowy view captured in the white floss-silk bonnet for each black lacquered hand-tub is distinctly witty and a Haikai taste. The signature reading "Kyosen" in the Indian ink signifies that the prints were made for him as his New Year gifts to be distributed among friends.
