The picture well suggests the splendor of Shin-Yoshiwara at its best. As one enters the Daimon Gate of the Gay Quarters, hundreds of such houses were lining both sides of the road. This one is the most famous of the lot. The woman seated on the stool is reigning courtesan recognizable from her crested lantern. It is the dream world of the gilded screen meant to intoxicate men's hearts and souls and deprive them of the power to remember affairs outside.
