Description
19th century mixed subject trompe l'oeil
This is a wonderful French trompe l'oeil mixed media painting, composed of a Romeo and Juliet-like painting, Alice in Wonderland, Madame Bovary, and two other humorous vignettes of a man fishing and a man on crutches from behind. The initial impression is that it is a scrapbook of images pasted together - but it is a superb painting and watercolor. The old frame adds a sense of age to the whole painting.
The devant de cheminée is a French invention that was very popular in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This kind of painting deceives the eye. For example, the most famous trompe l'oeil painting "Hunting Trophy"; (you name it), eventually evolved into a letter holder, etc.
