Description
A refined Grand Tour sheet recording a romantic Gothic ruin, **dated 1813** and attributed to the French draughtsman **Charles-Joseph Celle**. Executed in pen with grey wash and soft watercolor heightening, the composition surveys the shattered shell of a great ecclesiastical structure"”arcaded nave walls, tiered lancet windows, and gabled fragments rising in staggered perspective. Celle's disciplined line maps ashlar courses, tracery and buttresses with archaeological clarity, while the transparent washes model light pooling through the empty apertures and cast the long diagonal shadows that animate the masonry. Low ruined bridges and scrub in the foreground lead the eye into the scene and underscore the picturesque dialogue between nature and architecture prized by early-19th-century Grand Tour travelers.
The drawing bears a period inscription and date at upper left and typifies Celle's taste for measured, architectonic views tempered by a poetic, almost sepulchral atmosphere. **Watercolor and wash on paper;** framed. **Overall: 24 in. W x 18.75 in. H.**
